Recent Events

August

As summer proceeds, we are still getting brief glimpses of our ospreys, and 05 continues to thrive. When we see it on the nest, it is often still demanding  - and sometimes getting - food from its parents, and is still occsionally being fed by the female, though well able to feed itself. At the beginning of the month, we still had glimpses of the whole family on the nest together, but as time went on, this has become a rare sight. More often we have been able to hear them, or catch sight of them in one of the surrounding trees. They are still bringing in pieces of netting to 'furnish'  the nest, though we rarely see who brings it. Despite decreasing sightings of the ospreys - or the tree sparrows we had earlier in the season, we do occasionally have other visitors: on the rather dull afternoon of 17th, a Red Admiral butterfly landed on the nest for a short while!

August 23rd: on Monday we saw the male and chick feeding on the nest, the first sighting for a few days, but no sign of the female. We were beginning to think she might have left for Africa, when she was spotted on the nest yesterday (22nd). So she's still here, but probably not for much longer.

August 30th: the sighting last week (on 22nd) seems to have been our last one of the female for this year - she hasn't been seen since. We wish her a safe journey to Africa, and look forward to welcoming her back in 2007. Both the male and 05 were glimpsed briefly this morning, but it won't be long before 05 makes its way south. Our male will probably be around for another couple of weeks. After his strenuous summer's work, he needs a few days on his own to feed up before the long journey
