Recent Events

April 15th - 21st

We now know a little more about our new male osprey, who arrived at the end of last week. EP was ringed by Roy Dennis at Abernethy on 13th July 2003, so he is nearly 4 years old - a young bird for our now quite experienced female (H/D is now nearly 9 yrs old).

Roy also told us not to despair of our older male, BS, turning up: the weather has been bad in the Bay of Biscay, and many ospreys have been delayed. Young EP doesn't seem quite to have got the idea of things yet. The first fish he brought her was tiny, and although he took it to the nest initially, he then flew off with it, leaving his new mate hungry, and presumably perplexed! Since then he has been bringing in more, bigger fish, which he sometimes shares, but not always. There have been a few attempts at mating, but nothing that looks convincingly successful.

The windy weather has not helped his inexperienced efforts. Once again, our ospreys are getting unwelcome attention from  the local crows, who have been trying to steal nesting material from the nest. H/D, the female , is quite often alone on the nest, but maybe EP is more attentive when we're not watching! We live in hope that we may yet get eggs this year, but it is possible that we won't, EP needing this year to mature and get to know his surroundings and his adult role. There is still  no sign of BS.
