August 2

Now we're well in to August, we are often greeted in the morning with an empty nest, as our three youngsters practise their flying and begin to learn how to fish. This morning, Friday 8th, we found our family perching on a couple of nearby trees, H/D and two chicks above the nest, EP on a neighbouring tree, whilst BB was alone on the nest, calling. Through the morning we saw various members of the family on the nest, as EP kept up the supply of fish. After lunch, BB was seen feeding itself for the first time - usually H/D or EP feeds it, even though it's now so big - so another milestone has been passed.

The week-end passed peacefully, with some lovely views of the young ospreys vying for the fish that EP brought in. Sometimes there was quite a tussle between the three of them for possession of the fish, but EP  brought so many, no-one went hungry. Although all three youngsters can feed themselves, we still see H/D feeding them.

Monday11th, and we didn't see much of the family in the morning, just brief glimpses as they visited the nest. Late afternoon BB was eating a large mullet, and mantling protectively over it when its siblings came near.

On Tuesday, we didn't see the whole family together until late afternoon, although we saw individuals briefly through the day. The next morning however, we were greeted by the sight of H/D and all three youngsters having breakfast on the nest. H/D was feedong 08 and BA, whilst BB had a flounder to itself. It may be the youngest, but it  has certainly learnt to stick up for itself! To show how much fish EP has brought, some was left lying on the nest after breakfast. After that, we just has fleeting sights of the birds through the day, with some very wet, rained on ospreys later in the day!

Thursday morning BB was feeding on a flounder for over half an hour -  no wonder it has grown so  well! It didn't manage to finish it though, and H/D flew off with the remains later in the morning.Through the day, we saw all our ospreys,  with a family gathering on the nest late in the afternoon. Both 08 and BB were mantling their fish, guarding it from being pinched. EP is excelling himself fishing. Let's hope he can successfully teach his offspring.
