August 4

Now August is drawing  to a close, we are seeing our ospreys on the nest less and less frequently. On Friday 22nd, we had a view of all three  youngsters on the nest together, but on Wednesday 27th we didn't see any ospreys all day. It won't be long before the female, H/D, leaves for Africa. She is always the first to go, followed by the youngsters, one by one, then last of all the male. He usually hangs around, feeding himself up, for  up to a week after the last young osprey has left. However, we did see H/D on the nest on Thursday 28th. Given the dismal wet and windy summer we've had, it's a little surprising she hasn't left at the first opportunity - it just goes to show what a good place Galloway is for birds!
