Chicks New Feathers

Our chick made its first appearance on the “real” TV with Wednesday nights Border TV news. The news team came to visit the Ospreys are back in Galloway project last week and we had sent in some footage of its hatching and feeding up to a few days ago, showing some of the highlights of its life so far.

On the nest a full two weeks on from hatching, Chick No.2 continues to grow well. Having been very lucky with the weather so far, this week brought a new experience for the chick with some rain. In fact it was a torrential morning of wind and rain, and H/D was doing a good job keeping our chick warm and dry, and as the rain had eased in the afternoon began feeding our chick on Trout.

As our chick is now 14 days old it is starting to show signs of feathers and is becoming darker as its new feathers grow. Keen to explore its surroundings, the dark colouring is also making it look a little sinister and more like its dinosaur ancestors now. As I write this Saturday morning, our chick has just been fed on Flounder and is beginning to take a more active role in feeding time, now trying to grab pieces of fish from mum H/D rather than sitting waiting to be fed.

Unfortunately we have had to concede that our third egg will not be hatching, it looks as though this chick is going to be growing up alone. However we can take consolation in the fact that there is the single chick on the Caerlaverock nest not far away.
